Social Media as a Marketing Strategy

In the year 2013, almost all companies have turned to social media as a primary form of marketing and advertising. This is because websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, and LinkedIn offer companies large exposure to many users at a relatively low cost.

It is easier to update a Facebook page, or send out a tweet than it is to create a commercial, design a new billboard, or even take an ad out in a magazine or newspaper. The trick is to tailor that company's image and products to the users that will want to engage that company in social media.

Take the company Axe for example. It is famous for it's body sprays and shower soaps that have become popular among teenage boys. One of their marketing strategies is a sort of guarantee that if boys use their products, then girls will instantly be more attracted to them. They then use various websites to deliver their marketing strategy. Now whether you agree with the message they are sending and think it could be immoral to use a 16 year old's hormones to persuade him to buy the product, it is hard to deny that Axe has themselves in a good niche for marketing. For example, teenage guys usually only have "that one thing" on their mind, and they also spend large amounts of each day on Facebook and Twitter. In my opinion, Axe is maximizing the potential to sell their product to this specific demographic and it seems to be working. Their Facebook page has over FOUR MILLION LIKES!

Please let me know what you think of companies using social media to market their products.

P.S.- Here is an example of a typical Axe marketing image that I found on their Facebook page:

  1. I think that companies in this day in age need to use social media of some sort to stay competitive. It only makes sense to use social media since you are able to reach a large audience at a relative low cost. By using social media you can build a fan base for your product or company. A benefit to having a fan base is you can advertise to them, get feedback to improve, and also build on your fan base by their friends seeing your page. It is a great low cost marketing tool and I believe it would be a mistake if you did not incorporate social media in some way for your business.

  2. I really do not pay much attention to the social media marketing campaigns of companies. Personally I am probably less likely to buy things that try to do too much social networking. But, I have seen things on social networking that have made me more interested in a company, those were mostly recommendations from a friend though.

  3. I think this is a very good strategy. Using social media for advertisement and marketing is much more effective these days that TV commercials and magazine ads. People interact on social media websites more than any other type of medium, and if companies use this as an opportunity to advertise their products and services, they could attract more potential customers. Also, if someone tried a certain product and posted about it on FaceBook, they could spread the word about it much more faster than other types of ads. And as mentioned in the post, it is much more convenient to change the way a product is advertised on the network; because it costs less and is not as time-consuming to make or modernize as TV commercials are. I also believe that in addition to the fact that social media websites keep us connected to people, they keep us connected and constantly updated to what is happening with different sorts of companies and organizations through these ads.

  4. Using the social media is a good place for marketing. Axe is a prime example for it since most the people that uses facebook are teenagers. Advertising a product to a certain demographic by the use of the social media is a good strategy. The "like" feature in the social media is a good way to gain attraction for a product. It is, in a way, engaging with the customer that are interested in the product.

  5. I think that social media marketing is a very successful strategy if that's where your target market is. When looking at Axe, their target market is teenage boys. Teenage boys are most definitely active on social media so it would make sense to have a strong presence on social media networks and market their products in creative ways towards them. It is really important to make sure that the target market is using the target social media network you plan on utilizing.

  6. Using social media is new-age marketing. With a process that is nearly free and can reach millions with one click, this type of marketing is here for good. As for Axe, they are doing their job and doing it well. Some companies may take it too far but this is not the case. Their consumer base is teenage males, and if anything this is letting them know that clean body odor is key to attracting women. Some people will look too far into this, but I believe that Axe is maximizing their consumer base with just a click of a mouse.
