Social Networking as a Data Source

It is hard to believe the that the applications that so many have come to love are selling personal information to ad agancies throughout the United States.

One of the most popular social networking sites is Facebook, this site tilizes its users information and sells the information to other companies. Facebook uses their users personal bio that they willingly post on facebook along with the photos they share to create valuable information about each user that advertising adgencies are begging to get their hands on.

Facebook does not stop there, through users downloading their applications such as Farmville and Words With Friends, Facebook can recieve even more information about that certain user.

Facebook is Watching You!!
Yet another way Facebook is learning more about each of its users is the "tracking cookie" they insert into your web browser. This cookie follows you on the web and tells facebook what websites your are going to while Facebook is open in a seperate tab.

Please feel free to share any good or bad experiences you have had with Facebook or any other type of Social Network.

  1. Social network websites are not only for you to communicate or interact with other people internationally but, this is also one effective way for business promotion, stay connected with some famous people, and follow up the recent news in the world.
A lot of business promotion minded people these days are now doing business online and use these social network websites to respond to customer queries and questions.
Personally, I quit using Facebook since most of my friends and family tend to use other social networking sites such as Twitter and Instagram. From personal experience, I really like using Twitter and Instargram because they are straight forward in uploading and downloading videos and pictures, and even post some comments. The most thing I didn’t like it in those new social networking is its safety, security, and privacy not strong enough in protecting your identity and personal information.

  2. No doubt that most people use social network these days. Social network helps people connect easily with family, friends or even famous people around the world. However, many people stop using some social network websites because these websites tend to use the informations of the user and some times sell it. For me, I am still using Facebook just to check what is new with my friends and family but I do not post anything kind of status, pictures or videos because I do not want them to use my information of even watch me. However, I use Twitter and Instagram a lot during the day. I usually delete the cookies everyday to be in the safe side of being watched form social network websites. Finally, I agree with Mohammad about what he mentioned in his comment about security, safety and privacy

  3. I still use Facebook to keep in touch with family, friends and also to promote my business, but it is scary to learn how much you are being tracked through the internet and Facebook. I am definitely more cautious of what I post now. As far as Facebook using your photos to advertise, I believe they have crossed the line. All I can say is be careful of what you put on the internet.

  4. I use Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends like the others, but I have always been mindful of what I post. I understand that as a business, its all about making money, but some things have gone a bit too far! Why isn't there an "opt out" type of policy on the web?

  5. The thing about social networking, like Facebook, is it not only allows users to interact with friends and family, but also it allows people to interact with new people. Social network are meant to interact with new people that share similar interest. That being said, business use the social networking as an advantage for advertisement. The more friends the user makes, the more views the advertisement will have.

  6. This just goes to show that you should never put anything on the internet that you wouldn't want being shown around. Besides that, this is still a terrible invasion of privacy and people should really crack down and fight this. It is really important (because I know that I don't do this myself) that we always read privacy policies when signing up for websites online because if you don't you are automatically agreeing to the terms and you may not like what's hidden in the fine print! Stay aware and be careful!

  7. To answer Fran's question, right now some sites will offer you limited access and not take your information. But sites like Facebook realize that people are willing to make that sacrifice to be on the most popular social network. In terms of an invasion of privacy, Big Data analytics is still in the beginning stages and limitations haven't been fully established, In the years to come laws will be established to help us but only to a certain extent.

  8. I believe Facebook is far too invasive on peoples privacy. Hence the reason I rarely post anything on there and always log out when not in use. Once you post something on the internet you can never take it back so user beware.
