Social Networking as a Recruiting Tool

Nowadays companies have turned away from physical job applications and word of mouth recruiting in favor of more modern recruiting strategies. A prime example of this is the website Linkedin.com. This is a website that is mainly used for professional networking. It has acquired over 200 million users.

People tend to use online networking and websites such as LinkedIn because of the ease of access that is granted to the users. Whether he/she are looking for a job or just want to become connected to professionals in their general field, LinkedIn has a purpose for nearly everyone in the job market.

It is also used by companies to advertise open positions in the organization. A large company, such as Bank of America, can post openings for jobs that range from bank teller, to college intern, to executive senior management opportunities. This offers the company free marketing and networking to anyone in that particular field that has a LinkedIn account.

In my opinion, LinkedIn is the most sustainable type of website of all of the social networks. Facebook can become boring. Twitter can be replaced by other opinion sites. However LinkedIn offers something for all users in every level of business.

I use LinkedIn because as a college senior, I would rather make myself available to many companies using my resume that I can send them in an instant, rather than searching the classified ads of a newspaper.

Please feel free to share your comments and personal experiences with social networks as a recruiting tool.

  1. I think that linkedIn is a great website for professionals to connect with other people in their field and also network with other professionals. It is important I believe to have a professional online presence. As far as Facebook I still think its important for marketing and business but as far as a personal account, the privacy settings should be set to only friends. Today you can expect when applying for a job that you will not only be judged by your résumé, but also on what they find online when they search your name. The time where you go into a job interview with a resume is coming to an end I believe. Employers today will get your application online with your résumé and then screen you online before you even get a interview in person. All I can say is be careful of what you put online.

  2. I don't have a LinkedIn account, but I can see how it makes it easier to connect to the business world than before. I also agree that it is more sustainable as a social website than Twitter or FaceBook are; because it can offer more than simply being connected with others, like the opportunity of landing a job and starting a career. I believe that LinkedIn is helping making the process of seeking a job and finding the suitable type of company to work for less difficult, and by that, it is letting people focus more on what they can offer to companies and present to them with their acquired skills and knowledge.

  3. It is interesting to see a social network website that is intended for business. It is quite useful to find jobs as well as helping business with this website. On the other hand, facebook does the similar fiture that Linkedin has such as advertisement. If anything, Facebook would be the best bet to show ads for the business. I'm not saying Linkedin is bad, but with a big name like Facebook, it would be difficult for business to do such a thing in the advertisement program.

  4. I have a LinkedIn account that I have been trying to utilize more now that I'm nearing graduation. I agree with the statement that LinkedIn is probably the most sustainable out of all the social networking sites because it offers all people at all levels the opportunity to find new employment which is something that everyone wants. Plus, with companies have such larger and larger presences on LinkedIn people are likely to stick to it. I have browsed the job board on LinkedIn before and it seems like it would be a great to seek employment opportunities. It also is great way to connect with other professionals that are you in your profession to gain that networking advantage that's preached about everywhere. Classic quote: "It's not what you know, but who you know."
